[Click to expand pic] Reminiscing with Wiggia about Sicily and our respective stays there and as it’s the winter solstice today, I thought I’d put up a few shots I took using Welshcakes‘ camera. Here is the cafe we frequented:

El Reg has run a post on the Qantas double-dip [H/T Chuckles]: The final report into the 2008 Qantas flight QF72, which unexpectedly dived twice during a routine flight, has blamed a combination of software and hardware errors for the incident.

Laura Dekker is on the home stretch. Having travelled east to west the hard way, she’s left Capetown and is now out of the worst of the wind heading north up the Atlantic. Why is she succeeding [touch wood] and why did Jessica Watson succeed where Abby Sunderland did not?

When Chuckles sent me this, I was always going to probably select examples other than what he would have selected. My top dozen are below [of those on display - they left out the recent AMs]. Now he is welcome to do a post with his top dozen, of course. In no particular order: Jaguar [...]

Doesn’t mean a lot in the scheme of things but something happened on Saturday that made me think. I live in a remote backwater, overlooking a scenic scene and getting to work on Saturday involves taking a train from the local station to the main or junction station and then catching another train from there [...]

John Wigglesworth and I have moved onto motorcycles and he says, about the above: As an add-on to what I said about the diversity of design in the 50s 60s this a supreme example. The rider is Tarquinio Provini, one of the great lightweight riders of all time, the machine is a 250cc Moto Morini.

[John Wigglesworth has made this post possible and most of the text below was written by him and the photos with the 20101101 prefix are his, on loan for now. Fair use for blogs and other articles is all right but please attribute to John if you'd be so kind - James] He begins:

Oh well, at least they didn’t do an Airbus: The automated undercarriage systems on a Boeing Dreamliner, a new high-tech jumbo jet, entirely failed to work during the landing approach of a domestic Japanese flight carrying 250 passengers this morning. The news follows a similar incident last week on a more conventional Boeing jet, in [...]

The interesting thing for me is that this is quite uncannily like a certain Russian lady I know/knew. She’d say the face is different and the outline but it’s not all that different and to readers outside Russia, it does illustrate the constant moral danger the male of the species was in the whole time.

At first I thought this was a spoof but it appears they’re deadly serious: A new Icelandic airline which will offer flights to “fine destinations at a reasonable price” as of spring 2012 will be called WOW Air and will be open for bookings “in the coming days,” as its website, which is under construction, [...]

Comments left by British holiday makers: “I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.” “It’s lazy of the local shopkeepers to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during ‘siesta’ time – this should be banned.” [...]

Economics Intelligence: However, as an avid cyclist (from John’s perspective: as a sansculotte of the bicycle lobby), I’m deeply disappointed in him. He recently published a rant against bike lanes in his home town New York City on his blog “Rational Irrationality”. His central argument is that bike lanes come at the expense of free parking. (Many [...]

Sorry but couldn’t resist the temptation. This is what I don’t like about NZ. I looked at the match report in the NZ Herald and it was all about the All Blacks, nothing about France and how valiant they were. Near the end of the report, they did manage a few words about France:

UPDATES 10:46: Damn. Oh well, that’s it for Rugby – bye bye. 09:55: Dagg misses touch and things are just starting to fall away for New Zealand. France have the ball in their own half as the game meanders towards the break. Bonne réception de Yachvili sur la chandelle de Dagg. 09:42: Two completely different [...]
