The first ever beach wheelchair race was staged on Saturday on Tynemouth Longsands beach.
Organised by Dolphin Lifts and Mobility and partner Shape Adaptations, director Stephen Smith, said:
The inspiration for the event came from my son James who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy and uses an all-terrain wheelchair full-time to get around and have fun.
The beauty of these chairs is that it gives the user so much more freedom enabling them to go where the majority of other chairs cannot.
Stephen added that he hopes to make the races an annual event, and raise enough money to buy some all-terrain wheelchairs which can be stationed at Longsands permanently so more disabled people can enjoy the beach.
He added: “It would just allow them to enjoy what others take for granted.”
