You saw the Telegraph wonders of the ancient world. Had a try at updating the list – not modern wonders such as the internet but actual constructions, including remaining ancient ones.
1. The Great Pyramid of Giza – naturally
2. Taj Mahal
… so I’d add to the list:
3. Great Wall of China
4. The Colisseum
Running out of room on the list. Channel Tunnel, Simplon Pass, Golden Gate, Empire State, Versailles, Duomo, Sistine Chapel, Panama, Thames Barrier, Christo Redentor, London Underground [historic], Peterhof, St Basil’s, Alhambra, Statue of Ishtar [New York Harbour], Easter Island, Three Gorges, International Space Station, manmade river [Libya], Suez, Palm Islands, aqueducts, Trans-Siberian, Trans-Canadian, Pyramid of the Sun, El Escorial, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Moses Crossing, Hoover Dam, Kansai, Eiffel Tower, LHC, telephone … and so many more.
Just how can a definitive list be made? Perhaps if we keep it to engineering works [inc architecture], that might do it. Or rather man-made.
Given that only seven are possible and that they must be those almost anyone on earth would know, from China to Kenya, along with having a certain grandeur or historical context to them, then my final list is:
1. Great Pyramid of Khufu
2. Great Wall of Qin Shi Huang and the Mings
3. Statues of Rapa Nui
4. The construction at John Thompson Farm
5. That Druid cannibal human sacrifice place on Salisbury Plain
6. Cristo Redentor – have to have Him in here somewhere
