Amfortas and some of the other flyboys are not going to like attention paid to this one:
I know the stats – more chance of being killed crossing the road etc. I love flying as it’s the next thing to sailing – the foils are the same, many of the principles the same, others are close but with ground effect considerations. And as of writing, the header on this page is not a boat.
Sailing is by no means safer overall – hundreds of monohull keelers go down each year due to a variety of reasons presented on these pages.
It’s just that when it goes pear-shaped in a plane … well, you know. Liferafts are not greatly effective in these circumstances. A parachute might help. Thermals for a light aircraft or hangglider are a bit more terminal than a windshift for a yacht. Call me a scaredy cat but there it is.
