When I moved to my new house in January I was aware that the road we are on is a bit of a rat run at certain times of the day and that our entrance straight onto the road (no pavement our side) made it a case for caution when going out.
But this was offset by the fact that a 20mph limit had been imposed, road humps laid and a pinch point at one end and a further full width platform hump outside the junior school that is on the corner of the only adjoining road.
What has become blatantly obvious since we moved in is that a very large minority totally ignore the speed limit and most exceed it.
What’s new about that you ask? Nothing in the general scheme of things and I belong to the appropriate speed for the circumstances school rather than a rigid limit, sadly my way of thinking is as ignored as is the speed limit to a degree I did not think possible.
As James knows I have a background in driving racing cars and I owned m/cycles some years ago but my judgment of speed is pretty good.
Without looking for them, I have seen boy racers side by side, various HGVs mounting the pavement side because they were going too fast to avoid colliding with oncoming traffic, ditto one with trailer that hit a lamp post doing the same there is not enough room for two HGVs to pass on the road everything else way over the limit inc tractors and trailers and sadly because I always respect them on the road having been a biker.
It was the last in an incident the other day that prompted me to email my local councillor to find out what the situation was re the speed limit.
The incident with the biker as I said was not unique by any means, it’s difficult to ignore the bikes. The noise tells you there coming and over 50 is not uncommon, but this one I knew was motoring as there was no acceleration just highish revs he went pass at I estimate 70 and I don’t think I’m wrong and repeated the trick a couple of hours later.
This isn’t speeding, it’s a death wish, one I wish on him with no one else involved, sheer bloody lunacy, and only equalled by another idiot doing a wheelie at about 50 for most of the length of the road in quite a busy period and I don’t go looking for all this.
So as I said, I contacted my local councilor and to his credit I received back within hours the full chapter and verse on the speed limit and how and why it was set up, he even gave me copies of all relevant correspondence with local govt and allied officials including the police.
While I’m in full flow, the costings for road humps – and I’ve seen figures before on this – are obscene, something that could have been laid by Murphy’s a few years ago for probably a hundred quid a go now cost £5 to £10 thousand – someone’s having a laff!
Anyway, the humps that were laid did not go across the road, as the axle noise from lorries crossing would have disturbed all and sundry, so individual ones were laid that are mostly useless as cars straddle them and our biker friends go between them.
But the one thing I asked about was if there was any Police presence ever. The answer came back – no, Police do not enforce 20mph zones or restrictions. One does wonder as they are the only part of the public sector to get a year on year rise above inflation with their council tax precept.
Where it all goes, I have no idea, as they seem to be ever more invisible these days.
So the whole exercise was a complete waste of time and money – no enforcement, no cameras, no bugger all and the local drivers /riders know it and completely ignore the signs and any common sense.
I did suggest that it might be better to go back to a 30 limit that they would be obliged to enforce even if only occasionally or failing that – piano wire across the road for the cretins. I give up.
