It’s like a black James Bond or American president [am I being racist here?] or a gay male Miss Marple [am I being homophobic here?]. It’s like women on the front line in war [am I being sexist here]?
There are things which are natural and right and then there are things which are unnatural and not right.
Not adventurous, daring, new, provocative – just unnatural and not right.
Going back to the black president – he’s not right because he is minority and representing minority interests with a chip on his shoulder. He’s also a communist [am I being politicist here]? Clinton would have been acceptable because females are a majority, so though many are often off their brains on political issues, they nevertheless have a claim.
But a black or Muslim or Chinaman or Klingon [am I being intergalacticist here?], whilst having a track record of supporting their group to the exclusion of the majority’s interests, is entirely unacceptable.
There’s a case, of course, for someone from a minority group who has assimilated and is very much pro-the nation and part of it – I’m not into exclusion on the grounds of what he or she is per se … but am very much against them when they go into a majority position supporting the minority’s interests over the majority – something Obama has clearly done.
I’m thinking of, say, an immigrant called John Demetrios who goes for office in, say, Australia. Don’t know if there is such a person but the principle is the thing here. So if his dad came to the country and worked hard, had kids and John has weaved his way into the life of that nation, then why not? To oppose him on the grounds of his ethnicity would certainly be a sort of racism. To oppose him because he constantly favours Greeks and is into special pleading is wrong.
Over here, Harman has no right to be in Parliament [am I being harpyist here]? Sure she is, biologically at least, part of the great female species but her vested interests exclude her. Look, donors to parties are excluded, aren’t they, if they clearly represent a special lobbying interest? The place for Harman is among the lobbyists, not in a position of power, let alone on the grounds of incompetence [am I being dumbist here]?
Coming back to Peter Capaldi, he has a number of things going for him.
He is 55 years old – brilliant, great [am I beng ageist here]? Finally we overcome the hijacking by the youthful and the lacking in life experience – for goodness sake, the Doc must be wise and have some substance. The recent Docs have been babes in arms, barely older than the flighty chicks [am I being youthist here?] they’ve had playing the companion.
That’s not right, that’s not natural.
Peter Capaldi seems to be right at last or at least the best chance since Christopher Eccleston. Tom Baker, the definitive Dr Who, hardly possessed gravitas but he did have a certain maturity woven in with his immaturity and a certain je ne sais quoi [am I a traitor to my own language here]?.
Capaldi looks like he might be a good choice. Sure he’s Scottish and that makes him quirky but then again, Docs are meant to be quirky [am I being Home-Country-ist here]?
Worst ever companions
That redhead [am I being colourist here?] with the lovely legs [am I being sexist here?] was nice to look at in that Blink episode but she didn’t have the correct attitude towards the Doc nor any sort of anything else.
On the grounds of being too feminist or kick-butt “women are the equal of any species on the planet”, also exclude please Mary Tamm, an utter bore, the one called Leela – she ruined Bergerac and ruined Dr Who – Billy Piper for being Billy Piper and Sarah-Jane Smith with her “I can do anything then get into trouble” persona and her whining. Also exclude Richard Dawkins’ wife for being Richard Dawkins’ wife [am I being anti-atheist here]?
Best ever companions
Zoe – an absolute honey and able to disable a computer with her brain [am I being brainist against the others]?
There might be a few others as well.
So there we have it. I wouldn’t like you getting the idea that these posts are highly personalized or that I’m opinionated in any way. Moi?
Describe, in a few simple words, who’d be best as the Doc and who as the companion [am I being insufferably bossy here or just tosserish]?
Yep, I’m definitely going to start watching again.
