Daily Mail’s helpful Jimmy Savile version of Maths in School:

Theme is:

Tried and tested maths techniques to replace unwieldy ‘chunking and gridding’ systems that baffle pupils

So let’s do two of them. This is how we used to do it:

1. Divide
2. Multiply
3. Subtract
4. Bring down
5. Repeat
6. State remainder as remainder

    Yes, but the answer to the first one is 207 remainder 6.

    I remember little of primary school but I do remember how they taught us long division. First we learnt it by rote and then it was explained. That order worked pretty well but all that was before “rote” became an obscenity.

    I now have time to do more in my workshop than hithertofore, both in carpentry and metal work. A lot of the mathematical calculations I do in my head, still following the strict procedures I learned in school more than 50 years ago.
    First estimate then calculate. Repeat. If there’s still a discrepancy reach for pen and paper. No discrepancy? Proceed, but always cut on the waste side of the line!
