“Winning” rights?

Christian wins right to wear cross at work

Airline check-in clerk wins right to wear cross after court rules that the UK failed to protect her freedom to manifest faith.

  1. Unsurprised to learn that she wasn’t one of the natives…

  2. Perhaps “regains” would have been more accurate, but its 3 letters longer — anathema to a headline writer.

  3. By referring to the act of “winning” a right, it infers that it is more of a privilege, rather than an actual right. Rights are something that is inherent in a person from birth.
It may seem like nit-picking, but it is a big difference.

  4. It is indeed, Bob. A huge difference.
