Dave Brubeck

Dave Brubeck, who has died aged 91, was one of the most famous jazz musicians of the 20th century. Brubeck, with his studious manner and earnest progressivism, aroused sharply conflicting views among musicians and critics. Charlie Parker admired him, whereas Miles Davis found his playing deficient in swing. Jazz aficionados, suspicious of his great popularity, often complained that his music was lightweight and excessively cool, or even that he did not play real jazz at all.

    When I heard, I had to take five to think about his contribution to easy listening jazz – one particular record playing a major (aesthetic) part in a major seduction (we ended up married).
    A sad loss to music lovers.
