Malcolm Marshall

Botham was simply magnificent:

Lillian Thompson were unplayable at times:

Many of the West Indians were unplayable at times:

… but my all time favourite – and it seems that of many cricketers too – was Malcolm Marshall:

Professional, nice guy, put back into others what he’d learned, fearsome for the top players, self-deprecating – no one had a bad word, talked to the kids, worked his guts out on the body and technique, never satisfied with what he’d done.   That’s what a champion is.

  1. ‘Whispering Death’ they called him on account of his lethal deliveries and smooth, silent run up.

  2. Um, no Michael Holding was Whispering Death, not Marshall. Marshall didn’t have a popular nickname as far as I know.

  3. Interesting that it was Holding who gave much of the eulogy.
