Cave art

Here is a fascinating article about so called primitive art and worth reading in full as well as enjoying the built-in slide show.

The idea that early man painted in this fashion or style because he had not developed the facility to do so is easily refuted by a visit to the Cairo Museum.

The familiar stylised depictions of ancient Egypt were just that, stylised.
They were well capable of verimisilitude in their paintings and sculptures and very much the equal of anything produced by Renaissance artists.

The greatest painter in history once said that he had spent his whole life learning how to paint like a child.

Here is the maestro himself showing how to produce primitive art and, by the way, this is nowhere near as easy as it looks. Try it for yourself if you don’t believe me.

  1. The idea that early man painted in this fashion or style because he had not developed the facility to do so….

That’s what happens when you are in a hurry and have no time to review and edit :(

    It should read….
The idea that early man painted in this fashion or style because he had not developed the skills or facility to accurately depict what he saw….

  2. Fascinating indeed, the lines, dots and grids mentioned in the first article are replicated everywhere.

I have always found cave art quite fascinating, not only because it is art but because of what it represents. It shows an intelligence and understanding by the people who produced the art. An intelligence which is usually dismissed (not understood) by modern man…

Love the vid which also reminds me of Rolf Harris and the way he produced art. It always fascinated me. Yup, way more difficult than it looks based on the final representation.

  3. Rolf Bloody Harris?!!!!! :(

    ROFLMAO!

have you seen that excremental mess he made here?

I’m no good at painting but I am a far better painter than Rolf Bloody Harris :)

  4. I was talking about the way he produced a picture out of nothing ;-) On his telly program…

But now you have mentioned it the Google link does not give his ‘real art’ justice.

It is a few years ago now but there were a lot of his paintings on display in a local store. I didn’t realise they were his paintings until someone pointed it out to me. They were quite different to anything you have seen produced on his telly program or in the media or in that Google link.

  5. The point of art is not to show what anyone could see, but what most people do not see. Of course Renaissance artists lacked cameras, which is why they painted what they did — tourist snapshots and family portraits.

  6. As I recall, the well-known self-portrait within one cave of 27,000 year old art was amazingly sophisticated. He was by all appearances a Gaul.

  7. Well it certainly makes one think.
