Just a quick one on match-racing

Match racing, in sailing, is a one-on-one thing.   It’s not clear from the Beeb whether this is really match-racing today or if it is fleet racing with match-ups.

I’d guess it’s match-racing, i.e. Ben Ainslie one-on-one with the Dane.   It’s a different game altogether.   There’s no chance to use the fleet to blanket your opponent and it’s less a case of who gets the start – still vital but in fleet racing, if you jump them at the start and have boat speed, then your clear air can allow you to thrive, whereas those further back have first to break out or go to the other side of the course to escape and that’s a lottery to an extent.

Match-racing is man on man from beginning to end and often the aggressive sailor wins.  Dennis Connor was excellent on MR.   I note it is 30 minutes only but that might be a Beeb error.  Either way, it’s far more intense and hence carries double points.

Quite nervous about Ben’s chances but here’s hoping.

………..

And let’s not forget GB pair in strong Star position.
