The original and the cover

So – which is better in each case?

This is the original but as it’s been on this site a few times, try this:

… and isn’t this a surprise find:

Little Eva:

… or Kylie?

The Crystals:

  1. Can’t choose between the 1st two, but I have always admired LR.

In the next two I prefer the 1st in both. I think Little Eva swings better and I don’t like RS’s voice.

There is also something about the time and context of the originals that doesn’t always come across in re-makes.

Don’t ask me choose between Joe Cocker and the Beatles’ With A Little Help From My Friends.

  2. Always difficult as you have to try and allow for the recording quality that was so lacking on the earlier tracks, but for what it’s worth IMO, I liked both of Tell Him versions they stood up well against each other, Little Eva wins against a nondescript Kylie version and the Crystals win against a strangely manipulated vocal in the last ?.

  3. Definitely something, isn’t there? Some sort of happiness to the rhythm or whatever. Linda Ronstadt is rightly the most paid woman in popular music because her voice is sensational and she does great justice to this song.

And yet … and yet … there is something missing – maybe in the backing band and the chorus. Don’t know, there’s something and KM is bland, sorry to say. Almost flat. Rachel Sweet does annoy.

  4. The difference between the Crystals and Rachel Sweet?

Phil Spector and the Wall of Sound.

  5. Yup.
