In the best tradition of sloppy journalism, I can’t do any better than copy and paste last year’s post [in part]. This is the day when the women remember the men and buy them gifts, plant kisses on them and so on. It was the old Day of Defenders of the Fatherland but has metamorphosed into a day for all men.
It could well be the model for a holiday worldwide – its counterpart, March 8th, being for women.
It was celebrated very patchily, as I recall whilst in Russia. Many women and girls would remember the men in the family and especially the old soldiers who’d defended the fatherland in the war.
This was always one of the most enjoyable days of the year, in my book. The guys and I used to have a drink or eight as well, so that was also nice.
If you’re a man or boy of whatever nation:
Поздравляю с Днём Защитника Отечества!
