Appropriate for a day of snow. Today was superb – not too cold, the snow lightly falling, albeit wettishly, a bit of spare time, darkness for most of the day as the night draws in early but the magic is only for a short time, sadly. Here is a reminder of it:

Two mathematicians walk into in a bar. The first one says to the second that the average person knows very little about basic mathematics. The second one disagrees, and claims that most people can cope with a reasonable amount of math. The first mathematician goes off to the washroom, and in his absence the second [...]

When I can do more justice to this in an article for OoL, I’ll post there but meanwhile, on the run, Churchmouse’s piece on the defecation within St Pauls needs to be publicized: Senior Anglican clerics are quiet on the matter. After all, only last week the spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion — the [...]

Laura Dekker is on the home stretch. Having travelled east to west the hard way, she’s left Capetown and is now out of the worst of the wind heading north up the Atlantic. Why is she succeeding [touch wood] and why did Jessica Watson succeed where Abby Sunderland did not?

The purpose in running this was to find out more from readers. Having come very late to the issue, which no doubt you’ve seen and have your opinion on, I’m still on the fence over it. It began by me watching a series and this episode came up. Up to this point, the young Scot [...]

UPDATE: Eureka – unexpected postponement until Monday. Get some of the other jobs done and get around the blogs. There are issues – the required reading for the course and I’m behind, with an assessment tomorrow, the other work things which are piling up, BT redefining my contract today and making something happen which logs [...]

You are on a Horse, galloping at a constant speed. On your right side is a sharp drop off, and on your left side is an Elephant traveling at the same speed as you. Directly in front of you is a galloping Kangaroo and your horse is unable to overtake it. Behind you is a [...]

When Chuckles sent me this, I was always going to probably select examples other than what he would have selected. My top dozen are below [of those on display - they left out the recent AMs]. Now he is welcome to do a post with his top dozen, of course. In no particular order: Jaguar [...]

This post speaks of Groupon but is not specifically about that company – it’s about the philosophy, the idea. The reason I’m interested is because I was exploring doing similar in the local area. Here are two takes on the issue – firstly, Drew’s Eatery: As many have pointed out, Groupon and other daily deal [...]

It’s probably been obvious that I haven’t been “present” as much and that’s because of a hell of a lot of reading in two spheres – the RL course I’m doing which is approximating a student load of online reading, coupled with a fair amount of material coming my way which I’m trying to keep [...]

… just to save you some time like. My mother wasn’t overtly racist as far as I could see although I did hear her once refer to someone with a tan as having “a touch of the chocolate there” and I did have a golliwog as a young boy. Noddy and Big Ears was our [...]

Obama’s inauguration: President Obama took the oath of office Tuesday outside the Capitol, as millions watched in person and on TV. He took it again Wednesday night — this time in the privacy of the White House, with only a few aides and reporters looking on.

How much evidence is required? In another blow to star of the Coalition’s “digital economy” strategy, Netflix has decided to base its European HQ in Luxembourg, not “TechCity”. Although Netflix is using the UK to spearhead its UK expansion – launching its video-on-demand streaming service here first next year – it will instead be “joining [...]

Regarding the UK serious danger of “underspend” of £1m pounds of taxpayers’ money: “I don’t suppose we could do inward investment stuff, could we? Could we use it for our leadership conference? Perhaps to provide funds for all of our staff to go out and visit companies and do promotional events…?”
