Terry Gilliam has made some great, relatively unsung films and been involved in some of the best other work. His opinion of Spielberg, compared to Kubrik, might have been right but maybe it was a bit uncharitable: Spielberg, on Kubrik, surely raises the former in people’s eyes:

After I’d suggested why don’t we all just decide to go back to the next stage after bartering and grow our own produce, Bill quango opined: I’ll swap you a banana for an Audi A6.

Some people won’t have a bar of it, some, like myself, love much of it but even so, there are certain overtones and assumptions in art deco, a sort of political mindset of the time which led to the next phase, parodied by Jacques Tati.

Edward Kennedy Ellington (1899-1974) is probably best known as the leader of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, which he was for almost fifty years. Not so well known was his prodigious talent as a piano player. Here he is with a superbly inventive version of what became his ‘signature’ tune:

These riots across the Muslim nations – a comment was made a few days back that it might well be a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire. If this lot of corrupt rulers is swept away, what takes their place?

This guy Frequency who commented at The Telegraph, really made me think: I am not surpised at all about this research result ! There is plenty of research linking Melatonin production to sleep and it is well known that Melatonin, an important Neurohormone and oncostatic agent ( cancer supressor!) is throttled by light waves during [...]

Les Immortels: As French culture has come under increasing pressure with the widespread availability of English media, the Académie has tried to prevent the Anglicization of the French language. For example, the Académie has recommended, with mixed success, that some loanwords from English (such as walkman, software and email) be avoided, in favour of words [...]

This is even more difficult, not being American and not having access to all their series over there. I mean, I knew about Friends but only ever saw one episode. Now, there’s no TV here and I haven’t seen an American series for donkeys’ years. Anyway, based on nostalgia, here goes, in no particular order: [...]

The religious analogy is too appropriate to resist. Jesus of Nazareth was wont to speak of False Prophets: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Interesting, in that context then that Daniel was once seen as a prophet [...]

Oh-my-goodness. This post began with a strong defence of free speech, quoting this: Gray is really being sacked for what he thinks. He did not consciously appear on a public platform to denounce womankind or slag off Sky – he simply expressed his personal views to a workmate. He is being sacked because, privately, he [...]
