“We have been chosen, … by fate or providence or whatever you wish to call it. As far as we can tell, we are the best there is. We may be all there is. It’s an unnerving thought that we may be the living universe’s supreme achievement and its worst nightmare simultaneously.” [Bill Bryson]

Listening to the lunchtime news today on the radio and there is an announcement that as part of the spending review the Coalition has decided that the Royal Mint will have to use cheaper metal for the coins of our realm. Starting off with the 5p and 10p but how long before the rest follow? [...]

Mad Piper hasn’t made all that many comments of late although I suspect his spirit has been very much present, in mysterious ways. Still, he’s now appeared again and clocked up the magic 300, so to him, that denizen of Middle-America and reader of the entire 1500 odd pages of my tome, coming out the [...]

Not precisely what this post is about More than once, certain people have castigated your [not so] humble blogger for referring to leftists and socialists.

First up is the lovely lesbian, Lindy West who caused dozens of commenters to say things like this: How can a person as stupid and uncouth as Lindy clearly is be allowed to write in a newspaper? This is the equivalent of allowing people suspected of having psychiatric problems on the X factor. Ironically she [...]

I always voted at my Party’s call and never thought of thinking for myself at all. And he never thought of thinking for himself at all. [Sir Joseph Porter, HMS Pinafore, 1878]

Somewhere on the road between Dubai and Sharjah a ‘city gent’ is taking a stroll. The umbrella is to shield him from the sun because, believe me, it is HOT when you are out of the shade. _________________________ JD‘s profile and a list of his posts can be found in the left sidebar at this [...]

This is King George Island, off Tasmania and it’s up for sale for $AU700 000 or thereabouts. A 15 minute boat trip from the mainland, if you have that sort of dosh and hanker for the quiet life, then this is for you. There’s another one going too, called Picnic Island.

Tom Paine puts two ideas. one flowing from the other: Each time the government takes money, it wastes much of it in administration costs. Public sector workers should pay no tax, because that “payment” is a costly myth. They should also not vote, because they have a clear conflict of interest with taxpayers.

Man cannot live by two-for-a-pound Toblerones alone [the medium ones, of course - the large ones are £1 each] … … but he can have a bloody good try. [Higham, J., Death by Chocolate, 2011]

Well, I was trying to find a pic of bobbed hair, wasn’t I, for my main female character in Books 2&3 and found one but it turned out to be Katie Holmes and so I had to look elsewhere but just before that, there was an article on KH [allegedly] having herpes and I thought, [...]

William Gruff [Gruff by name, Gruff by nature] has cracked it for the Big Two Oh, spurred on by Rossa’s culinary conundrums, of course. Gruffy’s contributions are a necessary counterpoint to the other witterings, providing the bass line, if you like, to my falsetto although he’d ask WTF am I rabbiting on about. Just don’t [...]

The search for old and deleted tracks can be heartbreaking. In the late 70s/80s, many 50s and 60s songs were covered in a better way than the originals [IMHO]. The Ramones did this sort of thing plus Radio Birdman [Jams's version here and The Englishman's Ventures version of a classic here]. One song I’ve long [...]

Isn’t it wonderful how that viper, Merkel, now comes out and says multiculturalism has failed? Isn’t it wonderful that people like ourselves have been saying this for so many years now, only to be ignored and then the clouds of her ignorance clear and she sees the truth, all by her little self? Or else [...]

Everybody who has travelled will have a tale or two about the weird and wonderful things that happen. Amusing tales, scary tales, strange tales….. In over thirty years of travelling and probably 1000+ flights I should have kept a log of all the things that have helped make the journeys interesting and entertaining; missed connections, [...]

Well the last one provoked a comment about the digestive system of the edible snail. Which is just as well as Dearieme was quite right. The instrument of torture, James, is for holding the escargot while you attempt to wrestle the mollusc from its shell with a pin or a little 2 pronged fork. So now [...]
