Laura Dekker reaches the Canaries

aankomst canaren2It’s very hard getting information on Laura Dekker’s movements but it appears that she has reached the Canary Islands.

She certainly doesn’t maintain her website well and who knows where she is or what she’s doing?  Is her father waiting in the Canaries for her?  This trip is in sharp contrast to Jessica Watson’s, with Jessica giving almost daily commentary, along with youtubes and course progress.  People criticized the commercialism of her venture but at least you could ride every wave and feel every gust of wind.

To Laura Dekker’s credit, she did explain:

I am sorry that the English version of my site was not updated and that my blogs were sometimes short with only a little information. But I could not quite keep everything going perfectly while at sea. I will now try and get it fixed.

It would be to her advantage to do so because it might get the public onside.

  1. I agree. Jessica Watson was the best of the three girls at blogging almost daily and keeping her fans and the media updated. Abby Sunderland was good, but not as good as Jessica. Laura is Dutch and only 14, so she deserves some slack. I think her website will improve as her trip progresses.

  2. Twitter Trackbacks…

  3. Probably true, Pete.

  4. I don’t mean to be a pessimist, but all the secrecy bothers me. She wasn’t real secretive before she set sail, but then sails off trying to avoid the media and even a sponsor. It angered the sponsor to not be able to put a banner on the boat because she took off much earlier than scheduled.

    Is there someone else on the boat with her that she doesn’t want anyone else to know about?

  5. There does seem something strange about it. On the one hand, it might be that she’s petrified that she’s going to be stopped by the authorities again.

    On the other, it could be as you say, Jody:

    1. someone else on board [father?];
    2. just wants a world cruise at someone’s expense.

    My feeling is that she doesn’t really conceptualize the interest out here in the wider world and is only interested in sailing without anyone hassling her.

    Perhaps she’s just too young to know how to deal with people but you’d think the father would be. Perhaps she controls him.
