There’s been another U.F.O. thingy downunder. Anything significant about this one? Well, so many people saw it across three states [and Australian states tend to be large]: Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, which suggests some sort of flight path to me. The light was making a spiral formation and could be seen heading west.

“My G-d, they’re armed … I’d better go and treat them well,” said Richard Vernon. “They’re breaking the place up – they need sympathy.” Here’s Episode 1 if you’d like to view all of them. JD [commenter] relates this tale:

One wonders about the stupidity of these westerners: On Friday, crew member Jenny Graham said they remained determined to dock in Gaza. “We remain as committed as ever to getting our 1,000 tonnes of aid and supplies to the people of Gaza,” she said. Look, you fool, you will not get within range of Gaza. [...]

This is a delicious story and if I use Wiki as my sole source, it’s because there is little dispute as to what happened. It’s the story of two tennis matches but to appreciate the tale, you need to know the relative form of the players and the social context. What caps it off is [...]

Hamas blocking entry of flotilla aid into Gaza Islamist groups says Israel must free all activists and agree to deliver the cargo in full before it will allow in any of the aid. http://www.jpost.com/MiddleEast/Article.aspx?id=177320

The guns issue was debated in the comments on this post [and obviously elsewhere on the net] but interestingly, another issue of Poverty was brought into it and conflated with the guns issue. While the two are not mutually exclusive, this post comes at it from the Poverty angle. A summary of the arguments in [...]

There is no way I’m paying for news. If The Times starts charging to view it, then it drops off my blogroll. If any other news source does the same, then they drop off the roll too. If that leaves me with no news sources, then I’ll rely on Radio 4 on the computer. If [...]

Abby has some issues – water pouring into her boat is the main one: I think when things like this happen you go into mild shock. After the initial horror of seeing water pouring into your boat, your mind just goes into a survival mode and you don’t give fear or any new problems a [...]

Predictably, the politicians have seized the opportunity [entirely coincidentally?] to argue for even more stringent gun laws, when the solution is the diametric opposite. There is not and never has been statistical evidence that violent crime went down when guns were restricted – quite the opposite in fact, as Joe Huffman could point out and [...]

Hamas blocking entry of flotilla aid into Gaza Islamist groups says Israel must free all activists and agree to deliver the cargo in full before it will allow in any of the aid. Just mentioning it because you won’t find it in any western news service. They really care for their people, Hamas.

Helen Reddy During a two hour phone conversation yesterday with a lady who occasionally reads this blog, she made the point that it had become very political and that many women would find me misogynist. For a start, is it misogynist to criticize a woman or is it just dangerous? And I’m not criticizing all [...]

That’s Deveny on the right Just to fill you in. There’s a female [ex] journo in Melbourne who sums up everything I detest about how our society has gone. She’s the one who tweeted that the 11 year old daughter of Steve Irwin, the wildlife man, should “get laid”. She thought she was excruciatingly funny [...]

Xxxl asks us to look at this graph of gold over 10 years in terms of the $: http://www.kitco.com/charts/popup/au3650nyb_.html Yes, the $ may survive, but what will it buy? That dollar graph shows, in spite of flagrant manipulation of the gold price by the banking cartel that views gold (correctly) as a rival currency, the [...]

In the area of scholarship and debate, the lexicon one dips into labels you as surely as what you’re actually arguing. In a political debate, someone dropping in the word Fascist and Capitalist as the bogeymen is pretty clearly identifiable, as are people dropping in “fairness for all’ along with the word “freedom”, the latter [...]

Just checked the German press and sure enough, Spiegel is calling the country Lenaland and writing that the Euro win “wird drastische Konsequenzen haben”. It’s not unlike Jessicamania in Australia and yet unlike it in that it couldn’t have come at a better time in the context of Germany’s current woes. There will be ramifications [...]

Roundup: United Nations Middle East envoy Robert Serry, who met with President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem on Wednesday, said, “There is no humanitarian problem in Gaza.” Serry acknowledged, however, that there is a need for certain goods in Gaza, such as materials for the rehabilitation of several buildings. This puts the lie to claims by international [...]

Har, in Hebrew, means “hill”. This above is the hill of Megiddo or Har Megiddon. The political-historical issue If the recent threat to Israel has demonstrated nothing else, it has demonstrated woolly thinking among pundits, some of whom would otherwise be considered allies of freedom, democracy and anti-Statism – we are natural allies, many of [...]
