Mothering Sunday
In 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases “second Sunday in May” and “Mother’s Day”, and created the Mother’s Day International Association. As Ann Jarvis said:
A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world. And candy! You take a box to Mother—and then eat most of it yourself. A petty sentiment!
The vast majority celebrate it on the second Sunday in May, following Jarvis’s campaign and so, in any attempt to get the celebration on the one day worldwide, this would be the favoured day. Despite the “International” Day of Women of most Slavic countries being on March 8th, Russia actually has its Mother’s Day on November 28 In France it is the First Sunday in June or last Sunday in May.
The odd one out is the UK, which connects it with Easter and has it on Mothering Sunday, part of the Lenten cycle [4th Sunday] and in 2010, this falls on March 14th. For the Muslims whom Peter Hain likes to cheapen and invoke for his own political ends, one opinion is:
”In Islam Each Day is Mother’s Day So Muslims Respect their Mothers More than any Community of the World ”
… and we all see how well Muslim men respect their women. Various Muslim nations have their own days for it, including the birthday of Mohammed’s daughter. For our good friends, the Argentinians, it’s Día de la Madre – the second or third Sunday in October.
Sorry to be a globalist and all that [had to laugh at how at Davos, the G word was not spoken by anyone this year] why can’t it be on the one day? The correct day IMHO, is Mothering Sunday but the logical day, worldwide, is the second Sunday in May.
This day today is a great reminder that we are a country based on Christian traditions, our religion is Christianity [despite all the spoilsports dotted around the country] and certain things like Mothering Sunday are not likely to alter any time soon.
Women’s Day
Question – do we even want to celebrate “Mothers Day” [apostrophe deliberately excluded]? Not all women are mothers, are they? What about girls? Don’t they get to be celebrated? Or would the ladies like two days – Mothers Day and Womens Day?
The family is the nucleus of civilization and mothers are the nucleus of the family. The attacks on the family in this age have not yet conquered motherhood.
Let me raise a glass and toast mothers everywhere. Kiss a mother today [preferably your own but let's not get too hard and fast about this].

The lads of the Redoubt will be making a special toast today, down at the Natal Dog & Duck…
“Here’s to women’s kisses,
and to whiskey, amber clear;
not as sweet as a woman’s kiss,
but a damn sight more sincere.”
This year Mother’s Day has gradually turned into a family day for me.
I should really go and do some work in preparation
I need a Mother Hen’s day just for me. Although I am not a mother, I act like one and feel left out.
