Blogrolls

What to do about the Blogrolls?

There’s just not enough time to visit the hundreds on my blogrolls and yet I want to.  My mate asked two things about them:

1.  What percentage of those you carry actually visit you?
2.  Do you carry them to be visited or as some kind of archive?

Second question first – there’s no doubt the first column is my daily clicking off point – I almost always visit via this page but if hard-pressed for time, then via Mybloglog [involving two more clicks].  As I no longer run analytics and have no idea who has visited or not, that can’t be used for visiting.

I’ve come to a decision.  I’m going to wipe the vast majority of links and then build them up again, slowly, on the basis of who visits here.  The problem with that is that the vast majority read from RSS, so they’re not going to be too happy about being dropped off and who knows how many people will then drop me off their rolls?

In the final analysis, does it matter?  Not only that but with fewer on the rolls, that’s more time visiting each one.

So, I do feel that culling time is near.

  1. I don’t see the problem – with yer modern blogroll, the blogs go to the top every time they are updated, giving everybody a fair crack of the whip. And if they dont’t get updated, you just don’t worry about them.

I have only ever deleted one particular blog from my blogroll because he was a total and utter arsehole, apart from that, if you link to me, then I link to you.

  2. I second that. You can put blog RSS’s on your blog’s front page. I follow hundreds of blogs all because of that function.

  3. Some of my random thoughts…

I tend to be rather trim with who I promote on my blogroll although I have lots of blogs in google reader.

I do promote one or two that don’t visit me (or at least not often) but they do interact with me on there own sites.

I don’t do reciprocal linking anymore after certain incidents!

If I am really busy there are just a handful of blogs I would go out of my way to visit. I don’t feel bad about not having time to visit the others.

My blogroll is due for a revamp too I am not happy with the way I have done hounds and non hounds so I need to work that out!

  4. I try to link to those who link to me, sometimes I miss one or two though. The others I link too are ones that interest me greatly and reflect if imperfectly my views.

I’m also not afraid to drop blogs that no longer attract my attention or interest.

  5. My blogroll is my regular reading list, it’s much shorter than the one in my browser. The sites are there for my convenience, not to generate either reciprocal links or publicity. If a site hasn’t been active for a month it’s moved into a list of ‘sleeping blogs’, where I can keep an eye on it.

I’ve just added a new, separate, list of a particular group of bloggers, but I think it’s too long to use easily.

I do like looking at other people’s blogrolls though, because it’s a way of finding different/new sites to visit.

  6. I don’t seem to have time to visit even my favourites on my blogroll as much as I would like. As for Bloghounds and Blogpower – I really should leave as I don’t do reciprocal visiting at all. (Although I don’t know if any of them visit me either!)

    But life is good.

  7. They are not things I could get excited about. The cleaner gets them wholesale and changes any low spools on Wednesdays.

  8. I’m one of those who tends to use RSS as it’s quicker and simpler.

It’s probably time I spring cleaned my blogroll – and there are a few I really ought to add, too.

  9. I did my Reader today and it is great. I can actually get to everyone now.
