Sacking’s too good for him

Prat of the new decade:

A British radio presenter has been sacked after he pulled the plug on the Queen’s traditional Christmas Day speech, telling listeners it was “boring”.

Tom Binns has lost his job at Birmingham radio station BRMB after listeners complained over his interruption of the monarch’s traditional December 25 broadcast to Britain and the Commonwealth.

“Two words: Bor-ring,” he said on air as he stopped the broadcast, before quipping “from one Queen to another…” as he put on Last Christmas by pop duo Wham.

What can one say to a “bezkulturni”, as the Russians would put it, with no sense of the appropriate?  Wham!  My goodness.

  1. Not quite the whole story. Some reports say that someone at the station went over to the Queen’s Speech by mistake. Most listeners of BRMB wouldn’t have tuned into that station to hear her Xmas message…that after all is what our tax to the BBC is supposed to pay for!

When Tom Binns realised what had happened he had to decide what to do about it. His mistake was to try and go back to the original format of his programme and make a joke about it. So he was made a scapegoat for someone elses mistake and hey not everyone thinks Her Majesty’s speech is worth listening to otherwise we wouldn’t have the alternative message on Channel 4.

  2. Gah I think Binns deserves peine forte et dure and a visit from mister pilliwinks… and I’m a republican

  3. Not the smartest thing to do!

  4. Sorry, I do not agree.

    Liz signed Lisbon.

She must have known that a majority of the electorate wanted a referendum.

At that point she abdicated all responsibility, in my book.

At any point prior she could have stopped the process and forced a referendum. She didn’t.

Just another vampire from that point. Useless.

  5. I don’t think he should have been fired. The UK is supposed to be a free country, after all and why can’t he make a joke about it? And there was some truth in what he said. I know you’ll say she was paying tribute to our soldier heroes and all that but there she was, at the end, going on about the less fortunate while she was wearing millions of pounds worth of jewels. It’s absurd.

  6. @xxxl – she didn’t have a choice, just like the rest of us!

  7. @Cherry.

    Yes she did.

WHEN she was Monarch she could dissolve parliament.

The threat would have been enough, since the majority wanted a referendum, any future vote (election) would have revolved around that.

Gordon the prat bottled on an election recently, remember?

  8. @xxxl in a (supposedly) democratic society with a constitutional monarchy the Monarch only has an advisory role.

Gordon the prat bottled on an election recently, remember?

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm there?

  9. @Cherry :-)

    Not sarcasm, just total disgust.

It’s the only way to utter anything relating to that discusting rodent.

Referring to your entry on James Scottish blog, you should wave your camera around South West Ireland sometime.

There is an Island in Bantry Bay, just offshore from Glengarriff, (100yds-ish) that has amazing scenary and horticultural jems. The gulf stream ensures always mild winters (although windy) and you have New Zealand, South African, etc, species, all thriving, in and around a ruined castle. The locals run boat trips (unless “elf and safety” have intervened since I was there).

There are several amazing peninsulars, and scenery in the area. (Google maps) And the “Ring of Kerry” tourist route, Muckross House and Gardens, – best caught when rhodendrums are flowering, (hope they’ve changed the stupid nationalistic state employed tour guide since I was there)

    All Worth a visit.

  10. @Cherry.

    Errmm, disGusting rodent.

    ……

Having just looked at google maps for Bantry Bay, you should purchase detailed paper maps and tour guide.

Google do not do a good job in this area.

Perhaps the UFOs scared google away. Or maybe a detailed satellite image would show what the UFOs were looking at.

  11. Cherry, I know from reading you to be in the erm, public sector. Do you have anything to do with these clowns in your dealings with various departments?

If you do, you have my sympathies :-)

  12. @xxxl – Ireland has always been on my list of places to go and the area you describe sounds just like my type of place although I think I would pass on the state employed tour guide :-)

I haven’t had dealings with those particular clowns but I have had dealings with others and I am not talking about local management ;-)
