Evening listening – greatest songs ever

joy_division1

Most people see greatest songs as meaning “in the current era”.  However, one has to include all popular songs, particularly those with international fame, where virtually everyone was singing or dancing to it at the time and the legacy still comes down to us today.

The song needs to be of a genre everyone does not specifically detest.  For example, Rammstein’s Du Hast Nicht is a great song in my eyes but what of people who hate metal?  Lennon’s Imagine had wide support but anyone who believes in Heaven would not agree.  Country and western lovers would detest New Order’s Temptation.

And so on.

The following are five, if I can find the youtubes, which were pretty well megahits and are still known by people today.

N5 There has to be a crooner in there somewhere so it might as well be the biggest seller ever:

N4 This one ushered in rock ‘n roll so it needs to be in here:

N3 Anything by the Beatles [take your pick]. Let it Be, Hey Jude, Sergeant Peppers. Let’s go with this one:

N2 I know I’ve run this before but the vid is the nicest I found to back the song:

N1 What song was sung by both the Germans and the British throughout the war and served to bind people together?  Simple:

None of the above would be on my favourites list but they are great by the criteria mentioned above.

  1. Pretty good choices; the Beatles song is the one we think of if your old enough to remember when they first became popular. Sinatra would have also been a good pick for crooner, but Crosby had a better voice, in my opinion. If a person was going to toss in a country western song, something like “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” by Hank Williams would do, or Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line”.
    Just my opinion.

  2. Like what you like and don’t worry if others don’t care for it!

  3. You can’t fault “White Christmas”, it’s the perfect pop song.

  4. My favourite Dietrich is the one about ” Ask what the boys in the backroom will have and tell them that I’ll have the same”. You couldn’t find that, could you, Hob?

  5. You’ll need to delete all of these vids cos I detest them all.

    Good selection.

  6. Too hard, Calumcarr, too hard. The flappers are jolly.

  7. Dietrich must be one of the greatest entertainers in history. She had an iconic face but the word iconic does not go far enough…..she was a woman. What happened to our world?

Once upon a time men were men and women were women…………Marlene was all woman.

    Sigh*

  8. Dearieme, I found it – watch out this evening.

TEV – yes. Calum, Mark, Jams and Bob – yes.

  9. If it was good enough for Andy in Shawshank, Canzonetta sull’aria from the Mariage of Figaro.

The 1955 Decca recording with Hilda Gueden if poss. It’s opera, but it’s a song. And bewitching.

  10. Your wish. Not sure it’s the Decca though. Check in 5 minutes, Peter.
