Punch at Nine

A man went to a beach party and drank some of the punch. He then left early. Everyone else at the party who drank the punch subsequently died of poisoning.

Why did the man not die?

  1. He put the poison in after he drank the punch

  2. He was Jesus Christ?

Something was later added to the punch?

He vomited the punch up? He drank very little?

It was the punch combined with some of the food that killed, and he didn’t have that food? (Or “other drink” rather than “food”.)

Or, he did have some food/other drink that happened to protect him?

The others went for a drunken dip and were poisoned by jellyfish?

  3. Either he knew the punch was poisoned or he did not know.

If he knew the punch was poisoned, he drank prior to poisoning the punch himself. If he was not the poisoner, he drank innocently before poison was added or he drank a sample drawn from the top of the punch bowl whilst a yet undissolved poison lay at the bottom of the bowl.

  4. :)

    Answer later.

  5. The poison was in the ice cubes.

  6. Because he left just before Pete the Party Punch Poisoner arrived, having escaped from an open prison nearby while being prepared for reintegration into society. Pretty obvious one tonight really.

  7. It has absolutely nothing to with the punch.

  8. He left early to see a doctor, because he realised the punch was poisoned.

  9. Sorry it took me so long. Here is the official answer – very simple and it was stated above:

    Punch Answers:

There are actually two possible answers Solution 1: The poison in the punch came from the ice cubes. When the man drank the punch the ice was fully frozen. Gradually it melted poisoning the punch. Solution 2: He could have poisoned the punch after drinking some of it.

  10. “There are actually two possible answers”: oh bollocks – there’s the list I gave and doubtless many more. Your two are just variants on the “poison was added later” theme. Feeble stuff, Hob.

  11. That was the official answer as given but as you say, Dearieme, there are others. Generally, people say I make them too hard. This time someone says it’s too simple. Ho hum.

    Shall try to do better.

  12. Where is the imagination, the wit?

The beach was hit by a freak tidal wave after the man had left and those killed were too pissed, through drinking the punch, to heed the warnings.

  13. I suspect this latter is the answer.

  14. They were poisoned, it said, Wm, hence my jellyfish explanation.
