Late evening drenching

What puts the fear of G-d into me is that in places like Drake Passage, there’s no way out and it’s like a giant washing machine with splashes up to 40 feet and the occasional rogue over 60 feet, coming from strange directions. This is different to a steady, rolling swell – it doesn’t really matter how big they are.

Tides are fearsome things too. I saw many of these in North Yorkshire but they can also be downunder:

  1. I remember once nearly getting caught by the sea at Sandsend. I was driving in my car at the time and the sea came up onto the road.
