Late evening listening – choral

Francis Cabrel’s famous number. There were so many youtubes of kids up and down France singing this – it was an insight into French life:
First, the boys:
Compare that to the girls:

Do you have a favourite between the boys and girls voices?
I read some things about this and these two were interesting:
ONE
TWO
I don’t think THIS proves anything except a political point.
When I googled “girls’ voices purer”, there was that same professor again and a Jstor and then nothing. The argument is that girls, being discriminated against, are not trained as highly and it might have been so, there are many youtubes of girls singing.
After THIS, it’s hard to tell.
Try THIS. Line ball really, isn’t it? HERE is the same hymn – but with boys. Tell me what you think.
Gosh, I don’t know. Perhaps the high end is purer with the boys but anything under that is even and in the low registers, the womanliness of the girls is preferable. Knowing the character of boys, it’s amazing that choirmasters can get them to keep to the note the whole time.
What’s your preference?
One and two are both interesting in different ways.
I agree with you about the third link that guy doesn’t understand the point of singing and choral music at all.
I can tell the difference between the two voices as well, the girls are softer and the boys are sweeter sounding more like a bell. From experience I am more inclined to think that the scientific explanation for the difference is the correct one.
I can’t agree with Aled that you have to keep the voices separate at that age. I sang in a four part (voice) choir when I was a secondary school, although most of the bass voices were teachers or 6th the tenors were younger students. The choir was highly thought of and the concerts were always packed out, wherever they were held.
Back to my thoughts on the voices, I wasn’t sure either. Initially I thought I liked the softness of the girls voices then I remembered how much I like the sweet sound of the boys voices. I came to the conclusion, it must depend on what mood I am in
It seems we think the same way about it, quite undecided between the two.
